Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks

Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks is now available on the 1st floor of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur Shopping Centre. It is located at the same level and the same side as Mercato supermarket. If you know where is J.CO Donuts & Coffee, you will be able to see Lavender bread store from there and Shihlin is just situated behind Lavender. They sell XXL Crispy Chicken, Handmade Oyster Mee Sua and a few more but I forgotten the names.

I bought XXL Crispy Chicken to give it a try. The price is RM5.50 and no taxes were charged. They make it right away when you order. So you have to wait for them to fry it. They place the chicken in flour then it was fried in two different oils. I don’t know what is it for. The XXL Crispy Chicken is made bone-in and uncut so as to retain its original flavour and juiciness. They don’t cut the chicken into small pieces for you like those in pasar malam (night markets). The most they will do is to pull it to separate it into two. Yeah the bone helps retain the original flavour and juiciness, however it is too big and cumbersome that it is very messy to deal with since they don’t provide any eating tools for you. Your fingers will surely get oily. There are so much meat surrounding the bone. How can one don’t use their hand if they don’t want to waste it.

Half of the chicken is thick and with bone and the other half is thin without bone. For the thick part, there are bones and as you eat nearer to the bone, the meat looks pinkish but its cooked. Just the sight of it is not nice. There are also thick pieces of meat. The spices are not tasty enough to cover the whole meat. If you like tasty food just like me, ask them to add more spices. Same applies if you like it spicy. I will definitely love it spicy. As for the thin part, it is tasty enough but the crisp flour is as thick as the chicken that you can’t taste the flavour and juiciness of the chicken. I measured and its like in 1cm depth, there is 0.5cm of chicken and 0.5cm of crisp flour. The chicken is kind of dry also cause its thin and in some part, you will eat only crisp flour. In total, there are approximately 70% meat & crisp flour and 30% bone. You will be full if you are not very hungry (it still depends as I am a big eater).

XXL Crispy Chicken…the thin part

My recommendations for them are to marinade the chicken more and to make the chicken as proportional as possible from one end to another.
